EKG
What is an EKG?
An electrocardiogram, or EKG, is a diagnostic test that evaluates the electrical signals in your heart. This noninvasive procedure uses sensors that attach to the surface of your skin in several places across your chest and limbs. The sensors record electrical impulses that occur with each beat of your heart.
Throughout the test, your Dearborn Family Clinic doctor monitors real-time results about how your heart is functioning.
Why do I need an EKG?
The staff at Dearborn Family Clinic offers on-site EKG diagnostics to quickly evaluate your heart health when you have unexplained chest pain or other symptoms, like:
- Rapid pulse
- Chronic fatigue
- Frequent dizziness
- Heart palpitations
- Shortness of breath
Your provider may request an EKG to detect arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, or dysfunction in your heart’s chambers.
An EKG can also evaluate how effective your treatment for existing heart disease is, giving your Dearborn Family Clinic doctor the information they need to make decisions about your ongoing care.
If you’re at high risk for heart disease or a heart attack due to your family history, your Dearborn Family Clinic doctor may also request an EKG as a routine screening tool as part of your preventive health care.
What can I expect during an EKG?
For your comfort, the staff at Dearborn Family Clinic does your EKG in-office. You can expect to lie on an exam table while your provider attaches the electrode sensors to your chest and limbs. Each sensor patch contains a wire that sends information back to the EKG machine.
Because the sensor patches stick to your skin with an adhesive, the staff may need to shave small areas of chest or arm hair to ensure the patch stays on throughout the procedure.
When the test begins, you need to lie still to ensure accurate results. As the EKG records the electrical impulses of your heart, you’ll feel no discomfort or pain.
Your Dearborn Family Clinic provider evaluates your heart’s activity throughout the test, which the EKG displays as wave graphs printed on paper. If any abnormalities are detected during the EKG, you may need additional testing. Your doctor can discuss your options during your appointment based on your results.
